Amazon Web Services, Inc., an Amazon.com, Inc. company, plans to invest at least $5 billion to build data center campuses in Douglas County, Georgia, creating more than 250 new full-time jobs, Elevate Douglas announced. This planned investment marks the largest capital investment in county history.
“This is a historic day for Douglas County,” said Dr. Romona Jackson Jones, Douglas County Commission Chairwoman. “We are pleased to welcome AWS to bring the most secure, resilient, and advanced cloud computing technology to the county, and with it hundreds of high-paying, high-tech jobs that will benefit our community, and our citizens for the long term. This initial investment from AWS to expand its infrastructure here and support artificial intelligence technologies is a game-changer, and will result in our community being on the forefront of innovation, further establishing our state as a leader in technology, innovation, and artificial intelligence, which will empower businesses here and worldwide.”
“We are excited to welcome AWS to Douglas County,” said Chris Pumphrey, President of Elevate Douglas Economic Partnership. “Their decision to establish operations here highlights the unique advantages our community offers for innovative technology companies, including a skilled workforce, strategic location, and a strong commitment to growth. We look forward to working closely with AWS as they become an integral part of our thriving business ecosystem.”
Amazon has fueled Georgia’s economic growth for over a decade, investing $18.5 billion since 2010 and supporting 34,000 full- and part-time jobs along with 44,700 indirect jobs. This latest AWS expansion will bring hundreds of new technical roles—such as data center engineers, network specialists, and security experts—and support thousands of additional local construction and supply chain jobs, underscoring Georgia’s thriving business climate and skilled workforce.
AWS is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud, and its data centers enable customers of all sizes and across all industries, such as automotive, healthcare, manufacturing, financial services, public sector, and more, to transform their businesses. Millions of customers—including the fastest-growing startups, largest enterprises, and leading government agencies—are using AWS to lower costs, become more agile, and innovate faster. The new data centers will contain computer servers, data storage drives, networking equipment, and other forms of technology infrastructure used to power cloud computing capabilities, and generative AI technologies.
“AWS’s ongoing infrastructure investments across the United States demonstrate our relentless commitment to powering our customers’ digital innovation through cloud and AI technologies,” said Roger Wehner, vice president of economic development at AWS. “We are delighted to expand our infrastructure into Georgia with this planned multibillion-dollar investment, which we expect to create well-paying jobs and drive significant economic growth for the county. State and local leaders have cultivated an environment that enables companies like AWS to make bold, forward-looking investments. We are excited to deepen our partnership with the state of Georgia and contribute to the continued advancement of its thriving technology landscape.”
AWS partners with local school districts to create Think Big Spaces, which are hands-on, minds-on STEAM labs for students. The company is actively working with the Douglas County School System to implement this program. These labs give students access to the latest technology and learnings that AWS has to offer. The goal is that each one of these spaces benefit 3,000 students per year, paying special attention to schools and kids that are under-resourced. AWS plans to launch Think Big Spaces, as well as other educational programs, in Douglas County in the first half of 2025.
