The Georgia Public Service Commission today unanimously approved a motion to expedite savings for Georgia Power customers based on recently approved corporate tax cuts.

Approximately $122 million in state tax cuts realized by Georgia Power will be applied to customers’ bills beginning in January.

“Recent rate increases and increases in the cost of fuel have put a strain on Georgia Power customers,” said PSC Commissioner Fitz Johnson, who made the motion. “I want to make sure that savings we know are coming will come as soon as possible. I thank my fellow commissioners for joining me to approve this rate relief.”

In the 2022 Georgia Power Rate Case, the PSC required Georgia Power to pass any savings from future tax cuts to the rate payers. Then, in April 2024, Gov. Brian Kemp signed a bill that reduced the corporate income tax rate.

Today, Commissioner Johnson entered a motion that said tax relief from the bill should be applied to customers’ bills starting in January. This will expedite savings for Georgia Power customers. Without this motion, the tax savings would not have been applied to power bills until January 2026.
